Consumers Call on Nestlé to Get on Right Side of History, Label GMOs on Package
WASHINGTON – More than 55,000 American consumers have joined a petition calling on Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage company, to provide clear labels on products that contain genetically engineered ingredients, or GMOs.
Just Label It and Food Revolution Network’s petition calls on Nestlé to “get on the right side of history” and label GMOs.
Under the mandatory GMO disclosure law passed by Congress last year, companies must disclose the presence of GMOs through on-package text, a symbol or a QR code.
Just Label It and Food Revolution Network urged Nestlé to follow the lead of Mars, which has pledged to disclose GMOs through on-package text.
By contrast, candy giant Hershey’s has said it will use QR codes, which must be scanned with a smartphone.
Just Label It sent the petition to the company’s CEO, Paul Grimwood, today.
“Companies that respond to the demands of consumers are the ones that not only keep, but expand, their customer bases,” said Just Label It campaign director Katrina Staves. “Other major food companies have listened to the wishes of the nearly 90 percent of Americans and provided clear, nonjudgmental GMO labels on the package. It is time Nestlé joins this growing number of companies and gives its customers and all consumers the right to know through on-package GMO labels, not QR codes.”
“On its website, Nestlé says that it’s committed to building trust by offering products and services that match consumer expectation and preference,” said Food Revolution Network CEO Ocean Robbins. “We know that nearly 90 percent of us want GMOs labeled. I’d call that a consumer expectation and preference!”
