Just Label It Presses Hershey’s, KRAVE Jerky and BarkTHINS to Disclose GMOs on the Label

Just Label It this week launched a campaign urging snack-food makers KRAVE Jerky and BarkTHINS to disclose the presence GMOs on the food package — not through digital codes that must be scanned with a smartphone or other electronic device.

KRAVE Jerky and BarkTHINS are owned by the Hershey Company, which is the only food company to announce they will rely on “QR” or Quick Response codes to comply with a new mandatory GMO disclosure law enacted by Congress in July.

Nearly 40,000 consumers have joined a petition opposing Hershey’s decision. Unlike Hershey’s, candy giant Mars has pledged to make the GMO disclosure on the package.

“Consumers want to know what’s in their food and how it’s grown,” said Gary Hirshberg, Chairman of Just Label It, a coalition of more than 800 businesses and organizations supporting mandatory GMO labeling. “Consumers should not have to rely on smartphones to have this basic right.”

The new GMO disclosure law mandates companies disclose the presence of genetically engineered ingredients but allows companies to convey this information using one of three options: on-package text, a USDA symbol or digital codes like QR codes. Rules implementing the new law must be completed by July 2018.

Hirshberg applauded Mars, Campbell’s and Dannon for pledging to make their disclosure on the package, and urged KRAVE Jerky and BarkTHINS to make the same commitment.

“Millennial consumers are rewarding companies who are transparent and trust them to make their own choices,” added Hirshberg. “These consumers will be watching companies like KRAVE Jerky and BarkTHINS closely to see how they make this critical decision.”
